Sinopsis

Monchi Álvarez says of this publication: “This city of sincere welcome, of northern embrace in spring, knows no strangers. Everyone who sets foot in Gijón, and stays in this beloved Xixón for more than 10 minutes, falls hopelessly in love with the capital of the Costa Verde, while the winds of memory continue to whisper of its industrial past. Of shipyards, metallurgy, mining, and the railway with its round trip to the coal basins. Of a port open to that sea that gave and swallowed, explored and received Baltic amber, cacao from the Americas, whales and bonito on their safe passage from the Gran Sol fishing grounds to the most secluded anchorage.

Xixón seeps into the very marrow of every mortal and remains there forever. To truly know the city, it is advisable to carefully choose the guide, the cicerone who will accompany us and show us the hidden corners and secrets of a fascinating Gijón.” The photographer Juanjo Arrojo, author of the images in this book, can certainly help us in this endeavor.

Juanjo Arrojo (Turón, 1950) is a photographer and a scholar of Asturias. A self-taught photographer, his interest in images led him to begin his photographic career in the 1970s. By the beginning of the following decade, he was already a recognized professional, and his interest in Asturias led him to explore this land extensively, studying its light, natural landscapes, people and their trades, and traditions.
