Sinopsis

The School of Salamanca, which emerged at the University of Salamanca in the sixteenth century as a revival of Scholastic thought, has profoundly shaped European intellectual history, particularly in Romance and Germanic regions. To understand its influence in Europe, however, it is essential to move beyond a merely national or regional interpretation. The School of Salamanca was not simply a Spanish or even a European phenomenon; rather, it should be understood as a case of global knowledge production and as a transnational discursive community.

This global dimension is crucial for understanding the depth and nature of its influence on Germanic Europe. By conceiving of the School of Salamanca as a transnational epistemic community, one can better assess how its theological, philosophical, legal, and economic arguments travelled, adapted, and resonated in the intellectual traditions north of the Alps. The present book examines the channels of transmission of these ideas and their manifold reception in Germanic Europe. Its focus lies on four interconnected areas: the influence on legal and political thought, the contribution to economic debates, the theological and philosophical impact, and the broader transformation of intellectual culture.
